Mummifying An Orange! 6th Formers Top Mummy Makers?
Children worked with the steps of the mummification process which Egyptians used to preserve their bodies from decay.
We tried to reproduce the process of mummification with an orange. Chidren wrapped three slices of it and placed each one inside a baggie and taped it closed. One contained a plain orange, the second one contained an orange wrapped in paper towel and the last bag had a slice with baking soda.
Children completed a mummification chart after checking each of the days (3 in all) to see which orange disk held up the best over time. Their conclusion? Baking soda preserved matter and facilitated the rotting of things but.....it smelt horrible!!!
